Top 10 2017 Food Trend Predictions

It’s that time of year again when here at Bake Then Eat we take a look at what the “experts” claim we will be eating and drinking in the following year with our annual predictions. Or more accurately our 2017 Food Trend Predictions. Remember, this is just a bit of fun and the information has been sourced from the internet, magazines and knower of all things food Pinterest 😂

So sit back and enjoy my 10 favourite 2017 food trend predictions in no particular order;

1. Vegetables as the Main Star of the Show

This one made me laugh in many ways, but mainly because having been a vegetarian for 30 years vegetables have always been the main staple of my plate. But on a positive note I am all for this one because hopefully it will make the vegetarian and vegan options a lot more interesting in restaurants all over the world. So bring on the roasted cauliflowers from Gordon Ramsey and the butternut squash risotto from Marco Pierre White….. Or is that just wishful thinking?

2. Ice Cream Roll-Ups

These delightful time consuming treats are all over Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube at the moment. They seem to be arriving from Asian street food vendors. Basically its flash frozen ice cream frozen flat and then scraped up so is curls up into rolls. Then loads of fruit and candies are then piled up on top. While they look great they apparently take a bit of time to make, check out this video from Aden Films on YouTube for a far better look at them.

3. Savoury Muffins

I can get down with this one, I am always looking for ways to cut a little sugar out of my diet. I made these Cheese, Onion and Chive Muffins years ago and you know what I may just have to revisit them sometime. Savoury items for breakfast can never be a bad thing.

4. Cold Brew Coffee

This one was becoming popular in the Summer of 2016 and I am pretty happy its going to stick around for another year. It made a far healthier choice for a cold coffee drink in the summer then any of the cold creamy creations our favourite coffee shops try to temp us with.

5. Pimped-Up Cereal

My attempt is pretty simple by comparison of some of the things I have seen. Seriously check out the menu for the new Kellogg’s Restaurant in New York. I just threw a little banana bread, some banana, vanilla almond milk and some chocolate chips over a little chocolate cereal. But some of these creations from Kellogg’s look amazing, I can’t wait to visit 😀

6. Watermelon Juice

So because Beyonce bought into a company making watermelon juice we are all going to go gaga for it in 2017. Or it could just be a really clever investment because who doesn’t love a little watermelon when the sun is beating down on you? I know I can’t wait to try it.

7. Chocolate for Breakfast

Its official now, we can all eat chocolate for breakfast. A recent study from Tel Aviv University by Prof Jakubowicz stated that in a test group those that ate chocolate cake and dessert for breakfast on average lost more weight then those that didn’t……… 😱😳😲 right pass the cake! Don’t believe me? Then check out this Article from The Telegraph with links to the University. You can thank me later 😉 to get you started on your new passion of chocolate for breakfast check out these Chocolate Muffins.

8. Candies being used in Bakes

This one is nothing new to us food bloggers, especially the bakers out there. Its one of the oldest tricks in the book, to easily switch up a dessert, cookie or brownie change the candy inclusions. But I’m not complaining about this one I am all for it. For a little inspiration check out my Insane Chocolate and Peanut Butter Sheet Cake.

9. Flexitarian

I actually put this one on last years list but with more of a leaning on people going part time vegetarian but apparently 2017 is going to be the year of our own diet styles. So for example one day a week we may decide to eat paleo and the following day we may choose to eat vegetarian. Or we may always have a vegan breakfast but eat meat the rest of the day. 2017 is all about you choosing what is right for you. I think this is a great thing as I enjoy being a part time vegan but you know what? Sometimes nothing and I mean nothing beats a big fat cream cake 🍰 to stuff your face with.

10. Purple Vegetables

Purple power is coming to a plate near you, and if you are anything like us Brits we can’t get enough of a good farmers market charging us premium prices for heritage vegetables. So bring on the purple sprouting broccoli, purple cauliflowers, purple kalettes, yep thats a real thing they are pictured below in all their purple glory! They are a cross between kale and brussels, purple sweet potatoes oh and purple carrots. Have I missed any out? I’m all for this especially if it gets kids eating more veggies but it will make it harder to sneak them into things because they are so colourful.

  5. ice cream roll ups. yeah, i can attest to the amount of time they take, but there is quite the ‘wow’ factor. i have a teeny little kitchen and my biggest challenge was finding and keeping a flat surface cold enough. luckily, i tried this with a smallish dinner party and just used a cookie sheet that i kept in the freezer.
